Introduction to Silicon Nitride
Silicon nitride is a is an important ceramic material composed of silicon(59.4%) and nitrogen(38.2%). Si3N4 is the most thermodynamically stable of the silicon nitrides. It is a white, high melting solid that is relatively chemically inert. It has a melting point of approximately 2830°C and a density of 3.16 g/cm3. Silicon nitride’s high temperature properties are superior to most metals, combining high strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance.
